For the past 10 years, Eddi has been performing with Scottish folk legend Phil Cunningham, under the banner of Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook, along with Capercaillie’s Karen Matheson (vocals), Lau’s Kris Drever (vocals, guitar, mandolin), John McCusker (fiddle, whistle, viola), Ian Carr (guitar), Kevin McGuire (double bass), and the Songbook Brass Ensemble.

The album wraps up fresh takes on familiar carols with far-flung gems and glorious surprises, from Eddi Reader’s sublime ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’ and Karen Matheson’s exquisite Gaelic rendition of ‘Silent Night’, to ragtime chorales (a shimmering rendition of Mindy Smith’s ‘Santa Will Find You’), instrumental shindigs (‘I Am Not Fed Up Of The Pacific Ocean’) and Kris Drever’s swooning-folk take on ‘Away In A Manger’. The record is by turns enlivening, cheerful and melancholic – and it’s always heartening.
